The History Behind Hershey’s Chocolate is Indeed Interesting

On September 13, 1857, in a farmhouse near the village of Derry Church in Pennsylvania, Milton Hershey was born. When Milton Hershey became a candy apprentice in his young years, he developed a passion for it, and at 18, he opened his own candy shop in Philadelphia. Six years later the shop closed, so Hershey moved to Denver, Colorado and started the Lancaster Caramel Company.

In 1893 he bought German chocolate-making machinery and began coating the caramels with chocolate. Then, in 1994, he started the Hershey Chocolate Company, which made baking chocolate, cocoa, and sweet chocolate coating for the caramel treats. Through years of innovation, the chocolate branch eventually overtook the caramel portion of the business.

Milton Hershey built his own milk processing plant, and worked day and night for three years before perfecting his formula for manufacturing milk chocolate. His hard work and the long hours truly payed off, because his chocolate was an instant success. It stayed fresh for long periods of time, it was affordable, and most importantly it tasted delicious.

Today the Hershey company and it’s name is synonymous with chocolate, but the company produces other products, such as Twizzlers, Pay-Day, and Jolly Rancher products. Chances are good that your favorite candy, and your favorite chocolate may come from the same company. Hershey’s has come a long way from making chocolate simply because it complimented their caramel.
